Library Link: A splash of colour at Airdrie Public Library

The most wonderful thing about March is the growing anticipation for what will soon be spring.

The colourful art work of artist Afshan Khan is now on display at the Airdrie Public Library.

The most wonderful thing about March is the growing anticipation for what will soon be spring.

We're excited for the sprouting of flowers and leaves, the flutter of bees and butterflies as our gardens erupt with new life, the vast prairies bearing their souls to the farmer’s plow, and the return of thousands upon thousands of migratory birds.

There are those who like to capture these marvels with their cameras, and then there are those who love to immortalize them on canvass, capturing the immense beauty around us as interpreted through their creative eyes and minds.

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we have a newly mounted art display that captures the vibrancy and splendour of the province we call home.

Afshan Khan is a local abstract visual artist with a passion for sharing the beauty she sees all around her through the bold colours and textures she applies to the canvas with deft strokes of her pallet knives.

Inspired by the likes of Vincent Van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, and Claude Monet, Khan’s style is playful and joyously rhythmic. Her subjects range from forests to fields to vases, and with each daub of acrylic or oil paint, her pieces flow and dance in a mesmerizing relationship created by her choice of colours and textures.

The artists who inspire her, Khan says, created beautiful art despite the many hardships they faced, and her hope is her art will “brighten up your day.”

Khan’s exhibit will be in the library until the end of April.

Also happening in the library, look for Teen Gaming on March 18 at 7 p.m. in the Program Room, and After School @ APL, five days of school-aged programming for ages ranging from 6 to 13.
