The Airdrie Recycling Depot is trying to encourage lifelong recycling by introducing some new carts for kids at its East Lake Hill location.

“There are just so many children that come to the recycling depot with their parents,” explained the City’s operations coordinator for Waste and Recycling Services, Shelley Anderson Slevinsky. “We know how much the children love to help by having their own carts. It gives them a sense of responsibility and it gets them engaged.”

Anderson Slevinsky added the hope is the new carts will become a teaching tool for future recyclers.

Right now, there are only a few of the kid-sized carts at the City’s main depot, but Anderson Slevinsky hopes they will potentially spark interest in local schools or other public institutions in adding youth-centred carts of their own.

“If they are successful, we will order more,” she said. “I am super excited, and I hope this is a great teaching tool … Just like the flag (on the cart) says, ‘Recyclers in Training.’”

For more information on the kids’ cart program, contact the Waste and Recycling Depot’s education coordinator at 403-948-0246.
