BGC Airdrie to host drive-in movie screenings this month

The BGCA Airdrie Club is excited to host a drive-in movie night on Aug. 12.

The BGCA Airdrie Club is excited to host a drive-in movie night on Aug. 12.

The event will show the classic film The Goonies in the parking lot of the Ron Ebbeson Arena, with a suggested donation of $20 per vehicle as admission. There will be 150 spaces available for the showing.

“We have had a lot of exposure on Facebook already, [so] it seems like a lot of people want to come,” said Kathy Ritcher, manager of events with BGC Airdrie. “A lot of people want to get out and enjoy an evening. And of course, The Goonies is always a good movie choice.”

Doors are set to open between 8 and 8:30 p.m. The movie showing will start at approximately 9:30, depending on the timing of the sunset.

Participants may want to bring their own snacks; while the BGC Airdrie team plans to host another drive-in movie night during the month of August, Ritcher said she is not yet sure if she’ll be able to secure a food vendor in time for Aug. 12.

“I am hoping to have a couple of food trucks for the second one,” she said.

The event, according to Ritcher, will be a great way for the community to get together, considering the last 18 months saw so many organizations have to delay or cancel their events.

“It is a euphoric feeling to finally be able to do what we are used to,” she said. “BGC Airdrie has always been a part of collaborating within the community to bring community members together, especially with children and youth, so this is an exciting time to be able to put these events back in place.”

Ritcher said not only is it great the club can host events again, but she is also happy to finally see smiling faces, with mask-wearing mandates recently lifted by the Province.

“With the pandemic, you could see the smiling eyes, but it is so nice to see the actual smiles on people’s faces,” she said.

While the Province has dropped nearly all COVID-related health restrictions in Alberta, Ritcher said BGC Airdrie staff are still doing what they can to ensure everyone who attends their event is as safe as possible.

“We will always look after the safety and health of our community,” she said. “If people want to wear masks, they can. If they don’t want to, they don’t have to, but we are still all about being safe.”

The second drive-in movie night is set to take place on Aug. 26 at the Plainsmen Arena on the west side of the city. That evening’s featured film will be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There will be around 100 spaces available, and Ritcher hopes to secure some food vendors for that event.
