The fire last Wednesday morning caused significant damage to the downtown restaurant and prompted a swift response from the Airdrie Fire Department.

Airdrie's fire department has released details of what led to the fire at Family Pizza last Wednesday.

The fire on July 4 in the early morning caused significant damage to the downtown restaurant and prompted a swift response from the Airdrie Fire Department.

The cause of the fire was later determined to be accidental, according to an update from the City of Airdrie.

A City press release issued on July 4 stated black smoke coming from the rear of the building and out of the roof vent and eaves resulted in an estimated $300,000 in damages to the structure and its contents.

Passersby noticed smoke coming from the restaurant and immediately called 911. The Airdrie Fire Department arrived before 8 a.m. and blocked off the main roads to keep everyone safe. They also warned people in the area about the situation.

The firefighters responded promptly to the scene, with 15 firefighters from Airdrie and an extra four from Crossfield. Thanks to their efforts, the firefighters were able to successfully extinguish the fire.

The Fire Prevention Bureau promptly launched an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire. Following a thorough examination, they determined the fire was accidental, stemming from spontaneous ignition caused by vegetable fats and oils present inside the building.

Fortunately, the restaurant was closed and unoccupied at the time of the fire. One firefighter sustained a minor injury.

Representatives from Family Pizza could not be reached before the City View's press deadline. However, in a post on the business's Facebook page, the restaurant staff stated they will remain closed until further notice to ensure the safety and well-being of staff and customers.
