Teen dies in Chestermere vehicle collision

A 15-year-old is dead following a fatal vehicle collision Sept. 25 in Chestermere.

At approximately 11 p.m., Chestermere RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Merganser Drive near the intersection of McIvor Terrace, according to a press release from the detachment.

The investigation revealed an east-bound sedan had made contact with the south curb, causing it to cross the centre line and veer off the road, striking a tree and fence before it came to a stop.

The driver, a 15-year-old Chestermere youth, was the lone occupant. The youth was treated by emergency services, but pronounced deceased on scene.

"This is a tragic loss for both the family and our community as a whole,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Wielgosz, detachment commander for Chestermere RCMP, in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”

An RCMP collision analyst attended to assist in the investigation, according to the release. Traffic was diverted from a portion of the roadway for approximately six hours to complete the on-scene investigation.

According to Wielgosz, speed is believed to have been a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing, he said, but charges are not anticipated at this time.
