Sobeys fulfilment centre coming to Rocky View County

Rocky View County (RVC) has announced a Sobeys customer fulfilment centre will be coming to the area in 2023.

Rocky View County (RVC) has announced a Sobeys customer fulfilment centre will be coming to the area in 2023.

A press release Dec. 10 said the centre will create an additional 1,500 jobs for the County and will “feature world-leading robotic automated warehouse and home delivery technology to provide a best-in-class customer experience.”

This will be the company’s first customer fulfilment centre for home delivery in western Canada, according to the release, and the third in the country.

With the company’s existing distribution centre in the county, the centre will meet the growing demand for grocery e-commerce and support an expansion of the company’s presence in the Alberta market, according to RVC.

“Economic diversification is a priority for RVC, particularly during these challenging economic times in Alberta,” the release stated. “This investment by Empire and Sobeys Inc. reflects the County’s friendly business climate and ideal location for the regional warehouse and logistics needs of many national and international businesses.”

Reeve Daniel Henn said in a statement RVC is proud to celebrate the confidence that Sobeys is showing with its latest investment in the County.

“Sobeys previously chose RVC for its Western Canadian hub, where it maintains one of the largest distribution centres in the province,” he said. “Sobeys will be leading the way in using technology and robotics to effectively automate their operations.”

Sobeys is the latest corporation to announce a fulfilment centre in RVC, following in the footsteps of Lowes Canada, which announced plans to construct a new 1.23 million square-foot facility in the region in June.

Henn said the announcement shows another example of how RVC’s tax rates, access to commercial transportation corridors and regulatory structures have managed to attract corporations to set up facilities in RVC. Amazon, Home Depot and Walmart are other international companies that have established fulfilment centres or warehouses in the county.

“The investment shows just how important the County’s continued efforts are to reduce red tape, commit to efficient and effective municipal operations and keep taxes amongst the lowest in the province,” he said in the statement. “These efforts will continue to attract the investment attention of world-class business such as Sobeys”
