RVS appoints new principal of Fireside School

Dave Banderk will assume the role of principal at Cochrane's Fireside School effective August 2020.

“[Banderk] is a reflective, adaptive leader known for his ability to build school cultures that promote personal wellness, connection and risk-taking,” said Superintendent Greg Luterbach of Rocky View Schools (RVS) in a press release announcing the appointment. “These strengths, coupled with his commitment to fostering collaborative relationships and helping to build capacity in others, has solidified his reputation across the jurisdiction as an innovative, yet approachable leader.

"I extend my congratulations to [Banderk] and look forward to seeing his contributions to Fireside.”

Banderk’s tenure with RVS dates back to 2001, according to the release. After teaching math, science and physical education at École Airdrie Middle School and Chestermere High School, Banderk joined the ranks of RVS’ administrators in 2010, taking on assistant principalships at Springbank Middle School, Bert Church High School and Langdon's Sarah Thompson School. In 2017, Banderk was appointed principal of Kathyrn School, where he remains today.

As a school administrator, according to RVS, Banderk has helped champion the implementation of research-based literacy programs, a response-based learning support model focused on inclusion and a robust student leadership program.

"He also has volunteered his expertise to RVS’ Superintendent Action Team, the Budget and Allocation Committee and the Assistant Principal Interview Panel," the release stated. "Committed to building staff capacity in the area of educational leadership, Banderk served as a facilitator and presenter for the jurisdiction’s Administrative Leadership Program."

Banderk holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership, a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Science, all from the University of Calgary.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend our congratulations to [Banderk] on his new position as principal of Fireside,” said Fiona Gilbert, RVS board chair, in a statement. “We look forward to his continued leadership within our jurisdiction."
