RVC received a petition from residents of Country Lane Estates requesting upgrades to the local water co-op at a regular meeting Feb. 25.
According to Kent Robinson, the Municipal Government Act (MGA) requires that petitions proposing a Local Improvement Tax must be signed by two-thirds of the owners who would be liable to pay for the tax, who must represent at least half of the value of the assessments prepared for the land on which the tax will be imposed.
“In this case, the petition is a sufficient petition,” he said.
The petition specifically requests the replacement of underground water infrastructure, the installation of water metres, the addition of fire hydrants and the demolition and reclamation of three existing wells and a backwash pond, according to administration’s report.
The group of property owners is requesting the costs be recouped through a 30-year Local Improvement Tax.
Following council’s unanimous acceptance of the petition, a Local Improvement Plan and corresponding borrowing bylaw will be presented at a future time and, at council’s request, a public hearing will take place.
Coun. Jerry Gautreau was absent from the meeting.
