During a regular meeting Dec. 10, Rocky View County (RVC) council was presented with the findings of the West Balzac Preliminary Engineering Report by Sedulous Engineering, which analyzed the feasibility of providing water and wastewater servicing across 640 acres from an existing system in East Balzac across Highway 2 to West Balzac.

“Based on the topography, the requirements from an environmental and engineering perspective [and] the pipe sizing, we did produce budgets,” said Jorie McKenzie, principal with Sedulous Engineering. “We’ve recommended that the County budget $9.591 million for the total project costs.”

The associated cost sparked some debate during a deliberation on RVC’s budget later in the day.

The design would be able to accommodate 1,000 homes in its initial phase, the report stated, but could ultimately support up to 2,240 units. Administration noted a recent investment in the Langdon Wastewater Treatment Plant provides sufficient capacity to support the connection of West Balzac.

According to administration’s report, costs are anticipated to be recovered though future off-site levies as development occurs.

Coun. Kevin Hanson was absent from the meeting.
