A long-gestating review of Rocky View County’s (RVC) Land Use Bylaw (LUB) is nearing completion.

During a regular meeting Jan. 28, council granted first reading to the new bylaw and four accompanying Direct Control bylaws. According to Sean MacLean, supervisor of Planning and Development, the new LUB is meant to preserve current development and subdivision rights while standardizing, simplifying and modernizing regulations.

“The current LUB is 344 pages long and has 38 land use districts within it,” he told council. “The draft bylaw in front of you today has 101 pages and 25 districts.”

The bylaw is the culmination of a comprehensive review that began in May 2016. According to MacLean, the last revised Land Use Bylaw was adopted in 1998, and while it has been amended since then, it had not been comprehensively rewritten.

A public hearing for the new bylaw will be held in March, he said.
