Langdon ready for annual Parade of Garage Sales

If you’re looking to do some inexpensive second-hand shopping this weekend, Langdon will be the place to be. The Langdon Community Association (LCA) is hosting its annual Parade of Garage Sales on May 1.

If you’re looking to do some thrifty second-hand shopping this weekend, Langdon will be the place to be.

The Langdon Community Association (LCA) is hosting its annual Parade of Garage Sales on May 1. According to LCA Chair Chrissy Craig, the hamlet-wide event is a longstanding annual tradition in Langdon.

“It’s been in Langdon as long as anyone can remember and is always on the first Saturday of May,” she said. “This year, that’s May 1. The community holds all their gear together until May and then there are garage sales on every block and every street.”

While the yearly spring event has boasted hundreds of garage sales in the past, Craig said the LCA is expecting less participation this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She said the 2020 iteration of the garage sale parade was postponed until July, but there were still approximately 40 to 50 garage sales available for shoppers to peruse.

“Not as many as in the past, but with COVID, it’s been different,” she said. “We’re not sure with this year, [how many to expect] because COVID throws a wrench into everything.”

Craig said the LCA encourages those who take part in the event to follow all public health guidelines, such as remaining socially distanced from others, wearing masks, sanitizing touchpoints frequently and keeping crowds to a minimum.

“If you see there are more than 10 people, just wait until they go,” she said. “We’re just asking everyone to stay cautious and follow AHS guidelines.”

For anyone who gets hungry during their garage sale hopping, Craig said five food trucks will be parked at the Langdon field house from 12 to 3 p.m. She added purchasing lunch from the food trucks will also support the community, as 10 per cent of the business’ proceeds will go back to the LCA.

With warm spring weather finally arriving in Rocky View County after another long Alberta winter, Craig encourages Langdon and southeast RVC residents to “get out and enjoy” the annual garage sale parade.

“We’ve all been locked up for quite a long time with winter and COVID, so it’ll be nice to see some people and to do it safely,” she said, adding many locals are looking forward to purging some of their household items.

“After you’ve been home all winter, it’s nice to get rid of a bunch of the stuff that’s been piling up inside your house.”

Registration is not required for Langdonites to set up a garage sale, according to Craig, but a Facebook event has been created where people can post their address and let others know which items they are parting with.
