Respecting resources

We’re fortunate to live in a community that takes pride in the resources we have – fresh, clean air, a beautiful landscape and plenty of lakes, rivers and wetlands nearby.

We’re fortunate to live in a community that takes pride in the resources we have – fresh, clean air, a beautiful landscape and plenty of lakes, rivers and wetlands nearby. The City of Airdrie is currently taking steps to help preserve these valuable assets by examining ways to educate the community about recycling and proper waste management (see story here), and by scouting out new avenues to help reduce our collective water usage (see story here). It’s refreshing to live in a city – and a country – that understands the importance of being environmentally conscious and is willing to make changes to help residents live more sustainably. It’s especially refreshing to see now, with Scott Pruitt’s sudden resignation from his role as administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) amid abundant ethics scandals, and the current U.S. president seemingly fixated on reversing landmark EPA policies and regulations. “A central feature of (Trump’s) agenda is environmental damage: making the air dirtier and exposing people to more toxic chemicals,” stated researchers David Cutler and Francesca Dominici in a May 2018 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. “The beneficiaries, in contrast, will be a relatively few well-connected companies.” With all of this going on just south of the border, it’s reassuring to remember that we live in a place where the environment – and all of the wonderful, important things it provides – is appreciated, by Canadians and Airdronians alike. We’re pleased to see our municipal government making this a priority.
