Planning ahead

After spending a cozy Christmas celebrating with family, there’s nothing better than going out with friends on New Year’s Eve, drinking champagne and toasting to a fresh start. For Airdrie residents, there are plenty of options to keep you busy this year, whether you decide to dress up and attend a gala fundraiser or simply bundle up to watch the fireworks at Ed Eggerer Park. No matter how you decide to spend the final evening of 2018, though, it’s important to ensure you’ve planned a safe ride home. While arranging for transportation when you intend to indulge during the season’s festivities should always be front of mind, recent updates to Canada’s impaired driving legislation means there is even more to consider, this year. Following the legalization of cannabis, new legislation addresses the penalties faced by motorists who choose to drive while under the influence. And, although concerns have been raised regarding the decision, RCMP members now have the ability to force a roadside breath-test on motorists – whether or not they are suspected of having consumed alcohol. It doesn’t matter if you’ve had one drink or six – or if you’ve shared a joint or smoked a bowl – getting behind the wheel after imbibing puts both you and everyone else on the road at risk. We encourage everyone to stay safe and have a happy New Year’s Eve.
