It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charlie Hansen at the age of 90. Charlie passed peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary after previously spending two years under the thoughtful care of the Bethany Care Facility. Charlie was born on August 16, 1930 as the older of two children born to Danish parents, Hans and Jenny Hansen, who had settled in the Airdrie region of Alberta in the 1920’s. Overcoming polio as a teenager, Charlie graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) with a Diploma in Refrigeration and proved himself a talented technician. Charlie worked for 30 years at the University of Calgary as Technical Officer in the Physics Department. Charlie was an active member of the IATSE Union in Calgary as well as the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees at the University of Calgary.   Charlie is survived by his children, Jennifer Hansen (Wayne Hewgill), and Thomas “Tom” Hansen; his grandchildren, Russ Hewgill, and Shannon Hewgill. Also left to mourn Charlie is his sister, Betty Mammel, four nieces and nephews and their families. Charlie was predeceased by his wife, Ruth in 2014.  They have been reunited at a private family service at Burnsland Cemetery. A Private Funeral Service was held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery). Those wishing to view the service virtually may reach out to the funeral home for further information. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family, via the website: www.fostersgardenchapel.ca
