A 16-year-old from Airdrie received serious but non life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a vehicle as he rode his bike through a crosswalk on Edmonton Trail at Centre Avenue on April 24 at 8:30 a.m., according to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis.

A 56-year-old woman from Carstairs has been charged with failing to stop at a stop sign under the Alberta Traffic Act, according to Curtis, which carries a $172 fine and three demerit points.

The youth has not been charged, despite not dismounting his bike before entering the crosswalk and riding on the sidewalk.

“ The greater onus is on the driver of the vehicle to obey the traffic laws,” Curtis said.

According to EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux, the youth sustained a left leg injury and was transported to the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.

RCMP is asking for the public's help to locate a man who robbed a jewellery store on Main Street in Airdrie on April 20 in broad daylight, according to Curtis.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., the man entered the business armed with a crowbar and threatened two employees, who turned over an undisclosed amount of jewellery, according to Curtis. There were no customers in the store at the time of the armed robbery.

After placing the items in a duffle bag, the man fled the store. The employees contacted RCMP, who attended along with the RCMP Police Dog Services and Airdrie General Investigative Section but were unable to locate the suspect.

According to Curtis, no one was injured during the crime. A review of the store's video surveillance shows a man in a black hoodie with the hood up, black pants and a white T-shirt, wearing dark sunglasses and gloves.

A man from Calgary is facing impaired driving charges after the vehicle he was driving rear-ended a second vehicle on Highway 566 between 8 Street and Range Road 11 on April 27 at approximately 10 a.m., according to Curtis.

“ There were no injuries. Officers on scene had reasonable, probable grounds to arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and that person has since been charged with refusal to provide a breath sample,” he said. “ It was just the two vehicles.”

Highway 566 between 8 Street and Range Road 11 was closed for approximately one hour while crews cleared the scene.

A court date for the man, who cannot be identified until the charges are sworn against him, had not yet been set, according to Curtis.

If you have any information on any crime, call the Airdrie RCMP detachment at (403) 945-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
