Rural roads have been covered in snow and ice after recent snowfalls. Drivers are reminded to take it easy on the slick conditions. This range road, east of Airdrie, begins to melt under the midday sun March 7.

Mother Nature reminded Albertans that winter isn’t over when a storm moved in March 3 bringing heavy snow and winds.

Environment Canada reported winds as high as 97 kilometres per hour (km/h) on March 3 with the strongest winds occurring in the Coronation, Brooks, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat regions. The Calgary International Airport (CIA) recorded 83 km/h winds.

The report doesn’t include specific information for all areas in Rocky View but stated in west Calgary, 23 centimetres (cm) of snow fell, the CIA had 12 cm and Springbank had 20 cm.

Perry Prete, Rocky View deputy fire chief, said there were more than 60 fender benders on County road ways, but noted no one was hurt.

“There were a lot of fender benders (because of) the white outs and people going slow and bumping into people who had stopped,” he said.

Airdrie RCMP responded to 12 calls for collisions during the snowstorm.

There was a brief snow dump March 6 as well, resulting in slowed traffic Thursday morning.

In Rocky View, roads are cleared based on priorities. Arterial roads are cleared first, followed by collector roads then local roads.
