Wild Rose MP Blake Richards is hoping to connect with residents in a new way.
On Jan. 21, as part of his annual pre-budget consultations, Richards will host his first tele-townhall using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology, which delivers voice communications and multimedia sessions over networks such as the Internet.
“There can be no doubt that modern technology is changing the way we live our lives. As a member of parliament, I am always looking for new ways to gather input from our riding’s constituents,” said Richards.
“This capability empowers grassroots democracy, which is good news for all Canadians. It’s also an extremely useful tool for those MPs who choose to put the concerns of their constituents first.”
Richards has contracted a digital communications service provider to manage the technical aspects of the event. During the evening of Jan. 21, this provider will begin contacting thousands of households across Wild Rose simultaneously. Those called will be asked if they want to take part in the tele-townhall event, and will be connected instantly.
“Participants will be connected over a period of about five minutes,” said Richards.
“As this continues, I will be providing an overview of the federal government’s budgeting process. Once all of the participants have joined the event, I will open the floor to questions and comments.”
Those who want to ask a question or provide feedback will be able to connect with Richards through the operator.
“This sort of event is unprecedented in Wild Rose; it’s never been done in this federal riding,” said Richards.
“We are expecting several thousand people to participate, so I encourage those who want to ensure they can take part to provide my office with their contact information prior to the event.”
