Standard, Alta’s Drew Gregory made a stop in Beiseker Nov. 26 to play covers and original tunes for a standing-room-only crowd at the Lazy Ace Saloon.

Gregory has been playing music since high school, and after receiving a $10,000 grant two winters ago, he decided to record an album.

At the time, Gregory had a four-song EP out, entitled My Drunk Friends, but instead of finding a local recording studio, he decided to go to the heart of the country music world.

“You think you are alright when you are up here, but when you go down there (Nashville) your eyes are sure opened,” said Gregory.

The 10-song album, recorded in the winter of 2010, is made up of original tunes, which Gregory hopes can make the radio in the next couple months.

“That would be pretty amazing (to hear your song on the radio). I don’t know what I will feel yet,” said Gregory. “I have done some radio interviews, I still haven’t had that first time. That will be unbelievable.”

Packing smaller bars and playing live is Gregory’s favourite part of being a country music singer, as the intimate environment allows him to connect with those interested in his music.

“I just love playing live. I want to get to more and more people. I love meeting new people,” said Gregory. “Bars have a lot of people who have the same values as me. If you sell a few CDs a show, you know someone was paying attention to something you worked hard on.”

Gregory hopes to make the radio in the near future, but isn’t exactly sure what he wants to do in the long run.

“As far as going down to the States, it’s tough to get in there. I don’t know if I want that. I like touring across Canada,” Gregory said. “I would love to have a cut (song) on another artist’s album, but I am just hoping my shows get bigger and bigger.”
