Two people in their 50s were taken to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary on May 22 in stable, non life-threatening condition after the motorcycle they were riding on was involved in a collision with a vehicle on Springbank Road and Range Road 33, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

A woman was transported by ambulance with a serious leg injury, while a man was taken to hospital by paramedics with a minor back injury and various soft tissue injuries, Loria said.

Paramedics were called to the scene at approximately 5:30 p.m.

According to Cochrane RCMP Spokesman Sergeant Jeff Campbell, the cause of the collision was a driver failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection.

“An SUV was northbound at Range Road 33 and witnesses said the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign (at Springbank Road),” Campbell said. “The motorcycle was going westbound on Springbank Road when it was impacted. Our collision analyst who happened to be passing by witnessed it and assisted in the investigation at the scene. Indications are that the driver of the SUV was on her cell phone.”

The 22-year-old female driver of the SUV from Calgary is facing charges under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act (TSA) of distracted driving and failing to stop at a stop sign, according to Campbell.

Fines under the TSA were increased on May 1. The fine for distracted driving has increased to $287 from $172, while the fine for failure to stop at a stop sign has gone up from $287 to $388.

RCMP in Canmore was called to investigate after hikers in the Spray Lake Reservoir area discovered what appeared to be human skeletal remains on May 21.

“There was a number of bones and bone fragments that were recovered from the scene initially,” said RCMP Strategic Communications Spokesperson Corporal Sharon Franks. “Once the Medical Examiner looked at them, it was determined that the partial bone from a jaw and partial bone from a skull were quite old - well over 100 years, is what they thought.”

Franks said the matter is not considered criminal in nature and no further investigation will take place.

“All of the rest of the bone fragments that were seized from that area were all determined to be of different species of animal,” she said.

If you have any information on any crime, call your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
