Sweet Summer Corn Fest celebrates last days of summer

Families looking to enjoy the last long days of summer are encouraged to visit the Calgary Corn Maze’s Sweet Summer Corn Fest on Aug. 30.

Families looking to enjoy the last long days of summer are encouraged to visit the Calgary Corn Maze’s Sweet Summer Corn Fest on Aug. 30.

The venue, located east of the City of Calgary in Rocky View County (RVC), is well-known for its many attractions, including a fun farm, petting zoo, and a 10-acre corn maze that now reaches over eight-feet in height.

Owner Mark Mouchka said organized events like the Sweet Summer Corn Fest are another way to get people of all ages out into the country to enjoy some fun in the sun.

“Our promise is to send people home happy, tired and dirty, and we never seem to fail to deliver on that,” said Mouchka.

The corn fest, now in its third year, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mouchka said highlights of the day include free pony rides (with admission) and a corn decorating activity for kids.

A corn eating contest for both adults and kids will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., where random guests will be selected to enter the challenge.

A farm bingo game will also take place from 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Mouchka said he encourages people to try the Taber corn on the cob that will be available for sale, either to eat on site or to take home.

“This is a good way to celebrate before back-to-school at a good outdoor venue, and to have some wholesome, down-to-earth entertainment,” he said. “It’s a way to experience a little bit of the farm and rural activities and to highlight the end of summer.”

Past events have drawn between 1,500 and 2,000 people for the day. Mouchka said it’s hard to predict the turn-out as the event is weather dependent, but he added he encourages families to include it in their weekend plans.

“The average time people spend with us is four hours. There’s a lot of highlights, like the tractor pull, the potato sack slide, the pig races and the pillow jump,” he said.

The petting zoo is also home to miniature ponies, kittens, miniature donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, ducks and turkeys.

Admission is $13 plus GST for people ages three to 63, and $12 plus GST for seniors. Children under age two are free.
