A 21-year-old man from Morley had to be transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary by STARS Air Ambulance on Sept. 20, after the car he was riding in was involved in a rollover eastbound on Highway 1, according to Cochrane RCMP Spokesman Sergeant Jeff Campbell.
“We received the call about 6 p.m.,” Campbell said. “(It was) a single vehicle rollover on Highway 1 in the eastbound lane at the Morley turnoff. The vehicle was taking the off ramp from westbound Highway 1 to Morley Road and left the roadway into the centre ditch between Morley Road and the TransCanada.”
The man, the lone passenger, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, according to Campbell.
“The patient transported by STARS, I would say he was in critical, life-threatening condition,” said EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.
According to Campbell, the man remains in Foothills Hospital in critical condition but is now stable.
The driver, a 30-year-old man from Morley, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire fighters and EMS. He was transported to Foothills by ground ambulance in serious but stable, non life-threatening condition, according to Loria.
“During the course of the investigation, alcohol was suspected and a blood demand was conducted. Charges are pending the results of the alcohol examination from our forensics lab,” Campbell said.
“The off ramp was closed for a short period of time but traffic was not impeded at all.”
Charges pending
The driver of an SUV, a man in his 60s, was transported in stable and non life-threatening condition by STARS to Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre on Sept. 22, according to Loria, after a collision with a dump truck.
“At approximately noon yesterday, we responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 22 and Highway 567,” Campbell said. “It appeared that a westbound SUV originally stopped at the intersection and then proceeded into the intersection and was hit by a northbound dump truck.
“The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation and charges may be pending under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act for proceeding into the intersection when it was unsafe to do so.”
Speed and alcohol are not factors in the collision, according to Campbell. He did not have any information about the man’s current condition or whether he’d been released from hospital.
The Cochrane Fire Department and EMS also attended the scene.
The female passenger of the SUV and the driver of the dump truck were not injured in the incident.
