One man was sent to hospital and RCMP is looking for two suspects after an early morning shooting near a fitness centre in an apartment building on Railway Avenue Sept. 27.
A resident of the apartment building said she was watching a movie with her partner when she heard three “pops” and “rushed to look (out the window) but they had gone.”
RCMP was called to the building that houses Anytime Fitness and the Copperstone Village apartments at 1:25 a.m. after receiving a 911 call of shots fired.
According to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis, upon arrival officers found one man who had been shot multiple times. The man was conscious when officers arrived.
“One man was taken to hospital in serious but non life-threatening condition,” EMS Spokesperson Naomi Nania said.
Curtis said the man remains in the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary in stable condition.
The victim is co-operating with police, according to Curtis. He added no details about the man’s age or identity are being released in order to protect his identity.
“We want to protect his privacy and have him recover and be able to assist us in our investigation,” he said.
RCMP is referring to the incident as an “attempted murder.”
“Gun violence is very rare in Airdrie,” Curtis said. “We’ve not seen this type of violence regularly, not in my time and I’ve been here five years. It’s very concerning.”
Video surveillance footage has been retrieved from a number of nearby locations, according to Curtis, which may be helpful in the police investigation.
Witnesses observed two suspects leaving the scene in a dark-coloured or grey SUV. RCMP is now asking for the public’s help to locate the vehicle.
RCMP Alberta Media Relations provided descriptions of both suspects in a release issued Sept. 27.
The first suspect is described as Caucasian, in his early 20s with a stocky build. He was wearing dark clothing and a white ball cap.
The second suspect is described as Caucasian, in his early 20s with an average build. He was not wearing a hat.
According to the release, the vehicle police are now searching for was described as a Subaru.
RCMP considers the two men to be armed and dangerous and is warning the public not to approach them but to call 911.
