At least one child allegedly received sewing needles in chocolate bars while out trick-or-treating in Cochrane on Halloween, Oct. 31.
Cochrane RCMP Constable Jennifer Brewer said the detachment received a complaint from one Cochrane woman, who claimed needles had been found inside two different chocolate bars.
“The complainant had been checking their children’s Halloween candy after taking them trick-or-treating when they found a sewing needle in a large O’Henry bar and another sewing needle in a large KitKat bar,” Brewer said.
The resident told RCMP officers she was trick-or-treating with her kids on the west side of the Gleneagles subdivision but couldn’t remember at which house they received the large chocolate bars.
“Gleneagles is a pretty big subdivision so we are hoping that someone else will come forward so we can narrow down where this could have happened at,” Brewer said.
“Halloween is quite a busy time. It gets very confusing so it’s really hard to say whether or not it’d be targeted.”
Brewer said she has not seen a similar incident reported during her time working as an RCMP officer in Cochrane.
“When we get cases of candy tampering it’s quite limited and it’s always taken seriously until proven otherwise,” Brewer said.
She said the incident should serve as a reminder for parents to always check the candy their children receive on Halloween before letting them eat it.
Officers say a person could face mischief or assault charges for tampering with candy.
