Seventeen firefighters responded to a fire in Williamstown with six pieces of apparatus shortly before noon Nov. 1.
The fire took place at a two-storey, six-unit townhouse complex on Williamstown Grove NW.
Deputy Chief Garth Rabel of the Airdrie Fire Department said the cause of the fire and amount of damage is unknown at this time. Investigators were still on scene as of press time.
“There was severe damage to the one fire unit and then some peripheral damage – little smoke, little water – to the units directly adjacent to it on either side,” Rabel said.
Members of the Crossfield Fire Department provided the Airdrie Fire Department with mutual aid. Airdrie RCMP officers, community peace officers and EMS also responded.
“We did call Crossfield in due to the complexity of the fire or the potential for severe fire with the conditions that were shown,” Rabel said.
He said no injuries were reported and all residents of the complex were able to get out safely.
“The team was able to rescue two dogs from the fire scene. The dogs were fine and returned to the owner. Unfortunately there’s still a cat missing at this time,” Rabel said.
“It’s always nice when we can get something positive out of something so negative.”
Gas and power to the complex were shut off and it took fire crews approximately one hour to completely extinguish the fire.
The majority of residents were able to return to the complex but Rabel said four of them were unable to.
“We just want people to be extremely cautious and careful. We’re coming into the winter season now so we like our residents to ensure that their furnaces are working properly,” Rabel said.
He said people should also take precautions when using space heaters, fireplaces and candles, especially at Christmas time.
