The 52-year-old driver of a semi truck traveling from B.C. to Calgary told RCMP the load of produce he was transporting – mainly apples – shifted, causing his semi to roll Sept. 29.
“An eastbound semi took the off ramp (from Highway 1) to go south on Highway 22. The load shifted and the semi went into the median or ditch,” Cochrane RCMP Spokesperson Sergeant Darleen White said.
The trailer landed on its side and the apples and other produce spilled out into the ditch. RCMP, EMS and Rocky View County Fire Services were called to the scene at approximately 8:45 a.m.
The driver and two occupants of the semi – a 25-year-old man and an 18-year-old man – were transported to hospital as a precaution with minor injuries, according to White. The three men are related and all are from B.C.
There was no disruption to traffic “because he was totally off the road,” White added. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Clearing up the spilled produce took a number of hours.
Motorcyclist injured
A motorcyclist travelling northbound on Highway 22 lost control of his bike Sept. 27.
“He took the merge to eastbound Highway 1, lost control and entered the ditch,” White said. “He went airborne over his handlebars and landed in the eastbound lanes of traffic. I don’t think he actually ever hit a car.”
The 19-year-old from Bowmont, Alta, was transported to Foothills Medical Centre by EMS.
“(Crews were dispatched) at approximately 5:05 p.m.,” EMS Spokesperson Naomi Nania said. “It was a 19-year-old male. Initially he was in serious, potentially life-threatening condition, but then (crews) downgraded it to serious but stable (condition).”
The motorcyclist suffered some broken limbs, Nania added.
There were no other vehicles involved in the incident.
Traffic in the area was not impacted, according to White.
