RVS seeks new Four Year Plan input

At the Oct. 2 Rocky View Schools (RVS) board of trustees meeting, the board reviewed a draft of the 2015 to 2019 Four Year Plan, which will be released to the community for feedback from Oct. 7 to Jan. 12, 2015.

At the Oct. 2 Rocky View Schools (RVS) board of trustees meeting, the board reviewed a draft of the 2015 to 2019 Four Year Plan, which will be released to the community for feedback from Oct. 7 to Jan. 12, 2015.

“It’s a very extensive opportunity to provide feedback,” Superintendent of Schools Don Hoium told the Board.

During the 12 weeks, RVS will hold school-based forums, student leader focus groups, school council focus groups, a business and community leader focus group, leadership team meetings, school-based staff meetings and outcome/strategy focus groups, a service provider focus group and a Four Year Plan presentation. In addition to these, RVS will be gathering feedback from the entire community on the RVS Facebook page.

Goals identified in the draft include: Learners are engaged, learners are supported and learners are successful.

Following the feedback, the new Four Year Plan will come to the Board for approval on Jan. 22.

Trustee Fiona Gilbert said she appreciated the simple language used in the draft, which she said would be easier for parents to understand.

“I think the plan itself incorporates all our stakeholders. Our focus is most definitely on the right place,” Trustee Helen Clease said. “The fact that we are bringing everyone together, that’s our focus and I think that we’re on the right track.”

Board leaders

Once again Board Chair Colleen Munro and Vice Chair Todd Brand will take the helm as Board leaders for the 2014/15 school year.

Trustee Bev LePeare nominated Munro for the position (which Munro has held since the Board election results in October 2013) and no other trustees were nominated. Munro was unanimously voted in as Chair for the 2014/15 year.

“I would like to publicly thank my colleagues for their confidence in my abilities as chair,” Munro said. “I look forward to being able to navigate us through all these big issues (the Board faces).”

LePeare also made the only nomination for Vice Chair when she nominated Brand (who has held the Vice Chair position since October 2013). Brand was unanimously approved as Vice Chair.

“I’m really please to serve are vice chair again,” Brand said.

The trustees were also appointed to 18 various committees, including the Advocacy Committee, Alberta Schools Boards’ Association and more.

Exemplary practice

The Computers for Schools (CFS) Partnership Program, which is a non-profit organization that provides computer equipment to schools, was honoured at the meeting.

“I would like to commend the Computers For Schools program for their exceptional work with RVS,” Hoium said.

CFS get their funding from the provincial and federal governments and have provided RVS with updated computer systems at no cost to RVS since 2009.

In the past year CFP provided 2,273 computer systems at a cost of $2.3 million and 40 printers at an estimated cost of $80,000 to RVS.

Harvey Northfield said the computers come from government, the oil industry and other private industry, and through donations.

“Thank you for your generosity,” Munro said..
