Rocky View County (RVC) council unanimously approved a redesignation on land near Airdrie, at the northwest junction of Panorama Road and Highway 567, at a meeting on Nov. 22. According to RVC planner Paul Simon, the land is currently used to house show horses for an existing tenant on the proposed 20.05-acre parcel, and the 74.54-acre remainder will continue to be used for hay production and cattle grazing.

“(The applicants) are getting older, they don’t live here, and they don’t want to have this residence to look after,” said Dave Swanson, who spoke on behalf of applicant Scott Porteous.

Unanimous approval was given to redesignate a portion of land near Cochrane to accommodate a new equestrian centre, west of Highway 766 at the southeast junction of Township Road 275 and Range Road 34.

In addition to a single detached dwelling, the lands currently house an indoor riding arena, a metal clad pole shed, several open front horse shelters and turn out paddocks with automatic waterers.

The redesignation will facilitate the creation of a 54-acre parcel to house the equestrian centre facility, with a 100-acre remainder. According to RVC planner Susan Lamola, the remainder parcel will be used as hayland.

A site-specific amendment was approved by council that will allow for an increase in the length of stay for visitors to the Springhill RV Park Campground, located at the northeast junction of Highway 567 and Highway 22. According to the applicant, this amendment will provide further options for visitors and will allow the business to remain competitive with the other campgrounds in the county.

“This increase will be from 14 days to six months,” Simon said. “There are currently two other campgrounds within the county that already offer a six-month stay.”

A subdivision was approved unanimously on a property located in Bragg Creek, on the south side of Spruce Avenue and the west side of Burnside Drive. The subdivision creates a 0.53-acre parcel with a 0.53-acre remainder, to allow for the creation of a new single detached dwelling.

Unanimous approval was also given for another subdivision in Langdon, on a property located south of Highway 1 on the east side of Vale View Road. Redesignation on the land was approved in July, and according to planner Jessica Anderson, the subdivision to create a 4.2-acre lot with a 76.20-acre remainder is consistent with that approval.
