A Calgary man, 43, driving a GMC Terrain was pulled over by Airdrie RCMP after he was clocked going 141 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone on Veterans Blvd. just east of Highway 2, June 29.
The officer believed alcohol was involved, and conducted an impaired driving evaluation on the spot.
The driver was arrested and transported to the Airdrie detachment where he was given a Breathalyzer test and recorded a blood alcohol reading of twice the legal limit.
He faces charges of impaired driving and speeding more than 50 km/hr over the posted limit.
As a result of the impaired driving charge, his license was immediately suspended and will not be reinstated until he appears in court.
Speeding over 50 km/h means a mandatory court appearance and six demerit points.
Cst. Jason Curtis of the Airdrie RCMP said the man could have killed or injured another motorist or himself had he not been stopped.
The man’s name cannot be released until a court date is set.
Bus collides with deer
A deer wandered into Airdrie on July 2 and was struck by an Airdrie Transit bus around 8:30 a.m. just outside the Sobey’s Liquor Store on Main Street South.
Curtis responded to the scene and humanely put the animal down.
The bus was not damaged in the incident and none of the passengers or the driver sustained injuries.
Vandals strike school site
Airdrie RCMP is looking for the public’s help to solve a case of vandalism at the site of the new Ecole Francophone d’Airdrie in Ravenswood.
Contractors working on the site on Ravenswood Drive arrived June 26 to discover vandals had smashed windows, damaged a gas tank and spray painted obscene words on a bobcat and a grader.
The incident happened after 6:30 p.m. on June 25, after workers had gone home for the day.
An RCMP press release says because there were no witnesses and no video surveillance, officers have not been able to name any suspects.
Damage is estimated at between $6,000 and $10,000.
