A woman in her 30s from Morley was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle she was in left Highway 1A and rolled, ejecting her from the vehicle, said Cochrane RCMP Sergeant Jeff Campbell.

“The single vehicle was traveling eastbound on Highway 1A just by Branch Road on June 23. It left the roadway and rolled,” he said. “Both occupants were not seatbelted.”

A 29-year-old man from Morley was found in the passenger seat.

“He had serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported by STARS Air Ambulance to Foothills Hospital,” Campbell said.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.

“We have evidence alcohol was involved,” Campbell said. “Our traffic re-constructionist attended the scene and is assisting with the investigation. He’s also trying to determine if speed was a factor but we’re still waiting for that analysis to come back. It’s unclear what caused them to go off the road.”

Campbell said investigators believe the woman was the driver, based on statements from witnesses and the fact the man was found in the passenger seat. She was also the registered owner of the vehicle.

One lane of Highway 1A was closed for approximately four hours, Campbell said.

The man remains in hospital and has provided police with some information.

“He has been briefly interviewed but because of his injuries and the medication he’s on we haven’t had a chance to do a proper interview with him,” Campbell said.

The names of those involved in the collision are not being released by RCMP.

Chestermere Robbery

A 25-year-old man from Calgary is in custody after being apprehended by RCMP in Chestermere for allegedly attempting to rob two businesses on Chestermere Station Way, according to Staff Sergeant Glenn Henry.

The incident took place just before 9 p.m. on June 22. Henry said RCMP received a 911 call from a business at 175 Chestermere Station Way reporting an attempted robbery. When the suspect was unable to get any money from that business, however, he entered a second nearby business and left with some cash.

Henry said the incidents are being treated as armed robberies.

“He alluded to a weapon and he did have a weapon on his person,” Henry said. “He didn’t pull it out but he alluded to a weapon and to violence.”

The suspect was apprehended in the Oakmere area of Chestermere after a short foot chase by RCMP officers. He was taken into custody and remains in the Calgary Remand Centre, according to Henry.

Henry said a bail hearing for the man was held on June 23, at which time the accused requested time to engage a lawyer. The case was put over until June 26. The result of that court appearance was not known by press time.

The name of the man cannot be released because the charges have not yet been sworn, Henry said on June 24.

No one was injured during either incident, however, Henry said RCMP brought in the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society as a precaution.

“We do that each and every time,” he said.

“Sometimes people may find it’s not a big thing right now but tomorrow, wow, that was pretty serious stuff. We just want to make sure our victim services are engaged. Whether or not they follow up with those impacted is really up to them.”
