Rocky View Schools (RVS) in partnership with Creative Airdrie will host a live art challenge in May and is seeking volunteer artists from Rocky View.

Convergence will be held at W.H. Croxford High School in Airdrie and is described as an art challenge where students come together alongside artists in a collaborative space to create a personal art piece based on a common theme.

“We are looking at ways to connect our learners with the greater community to help foster connections and meet people students may not otherwise have an opportunity to, within a school setting,” said Alison Turner, RVS teacher at Muriel Clayton Middle School in Airdrie.

She said the event is also hoped to provide students exposure and experience to the arts, challenge students to push their creative comfort zones and “to have fun exploring the arts and the creative process while celebrating the value of arts in our society.”

“We thought Convergence would be a fun way to connect RVS learners and the greater community by having an entire day full of making, creating and designing ideas,” Turner added. “Rocky View Schools is always looking for meaningful and authentic ways students can connect with the local community.”

She said the idea for Convergence was the first initiated by herself and Airdrie’s George McDougall High School teacher Mark Turner.

“I approached CAS (Creative Airdrie Society) with our idea for this event and they were very enthusiastic for the potential of such a collaboration,” Turner said. “I chose CAS based on the great things I have seen them accomplish in the community so far, recognizing that they are connected to both the arts and the business community, and ultimately can help provide us the links needed to make this event connect to the community.”

In order to make Convergence a success, the group is looking for local artists to provide design thinking guidance and mentorship for learners in grades 8 to 12. Volunteers with a variety of backgrounds from visual art, drama, media art, music, design, dance, ceramics, multi-media or any other innovative process are invited to help with the event.

Volunteer artists are welcome to create and exhibit along side students, according to the Convergence press release.
