Rocky View Schools’ fourth annual Links to Learning charity golf tournament will take place on Aug. 22, with event proceeds going toward board-sponsored bursaries, scholarships and awards.
The tournament takes place at the Links of Glen Eagles near Cochrane.
The event has raised about $50,000 in the last three years and trustees all agree it’s a lot of fun.
“In its fourth year it has become a great mainstay event for Rocky View (Schools),” said Jacquie Mirtle, RVS’ sports coordinator. “It’s a chance to support the division as a whole, not just one school.”
Ten per cent of the money raised is retained by the board to give to students as scholarships. The remainder will go directly into division schools.
Mirtle said about 70 people attended last year’s event and prizes given out last year included a $4,000 SMART Board.
The event is a shotgun start and trustees agree it’s a fun-filled day and a nice way to give back to all the organizations and people that have a hand in making RVS what it is.
“Teachers, central office employees, trustees, suppliers, other invited guests come out for the day,” said Airdrie Trustee Don Thomas. “Pretty much anyone connected to the division is invited to participate.”
Thomas said last year’s event was a true success and various companies sponsored holes and multiple prizes were given out to teams and individuals over the course of 18 holes.
“It’s a good time, it’s good company and it’s all for a good cause,” said Thomas.
He said the event is fun, but there are often friendly rivalries that develop and a team from Chestermere took the crown last year.
Bragg Creek and area Trustee Helen Clease has run the putting green in the past and said it’s always fun to joke around with people and enjoy a nice day for a great cause.
“It’s a great event and it basically just ends up being a real fun day,” said Clease.
In addition, Clease said awards and students’ honours that the event raises money for is a large part of the day’s focus.
“We always honour the academics within our schools,” she said. “This is a chance to honour the other things that happen in our school. It’s about developing the whole child.”
Clease said some of the other recognitions involve students and their stewardship in and outside of the classroom.
“We want to make sure the kids that go out into the world are well-rounded students,” she said.
Participants will be provided with a gift bag and power cart, as well as breakfast and lunch. Prizes will be awarded at a dinner banquet following the tournament. Guests also will receive a tax receipt for $105.
