Rocky View County council approved a funding request of $7,775 to replace an aging furnace and bring the Springbank Community Association hall up to code.

During a regularly scheduled council meeting Jan. 21, Sue Graham, community services manager for the County, said the furnace was installed for the building in the 1960s and is now functioning at a significantly reduced capacity.

She asked for the full amount from the recreation public reserves fund to cover the cost of these emergency repairs.

“The Springbank hall is an important amenity in the community and serves as a gathering place for groups and events,” said Reeve Rolly Ashdown in a prepared statement.

“We are happy to be able to help them with making some much needed repairs.”

The hall, in existence since 1907, is a meeting place for various community groups such as the Springbank Community Association, Lions Club, the Springbank School and a karate club.

The necessary repairs are expected to take up to three months. The hall also needs roof repairs and upgrades to the men’s and women’s washrooms totalling $16,351. Graham said any additional funding requests can come forward to council this spring during the next round of grant applications but anything approved would have to be matched by the community association 50 per cent.

As of October 2012, approximately $282,000 in uncommitted funds were held in the Rocky View West Recreation.
