Rocky View County council approves emergency community funding

Rocky View County (RVC) council approved $7,215 in emergency capital funding from the Bow North Recreation Board’s (BNRB) section of the public reserve at the meeting on Feb. 25.

Rocky View County (RVC) council approved $7,215 in emergency capital funding from the Bow North Recreation Board’s (BNRB) section of the public reserve at the meeting on Feb. 25.

RVC Recreation Services Coordinator Dari Lang said $3,900 of the funding is required by the Bow Valley Agricultural Society (BVAS) to purchase two new furnaces in the Bill Herron Arena.

Lang said one of the two furnaces that heats the lobby area in the facility quit in January, and the County and the facility manager decided it would be “more cost effective to replace both aging furnaces at the same time.” She said both furnaces were scheduled to be replaced in 2016.

According to a County report, BVAS is contributing 50 per cent of the total estimated project cost of $7,800.

Council approved funds not to exceed $3,315 in order for the Bow Valley Community Club (BVCC) to replace an oven in the lounge of its club. Lang said BVCC, which operates the curling facility in Indus, notified the County in December 2013, that the oven needed repair, but replacing the appliance was deemed more economical.

Lang said the lounge “provides substantial revenue to the curling facility,” and without the use of the oven, the curling club said “revenue generated from the lounge services would be substantially reduced.”

According to a County report, BVCC is requesting funding to cover 100 per cent of the cost of the project. Lang said community groups in the County are eligible to apply for grants to cover the full cost of projects for emergencies “should they be unable to support a cost-sharing expenditure.”

BNRB had about $146,000 in uncommitted funds in their capital public reserve account as of Dec. 31, 2013, according to a County report.
