Airdrie Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at 95 Emberdale Way, at about 5:15 p.m., March 14.

When firefighters arrived, light smoke was emanating from the basement suite of a residential bungalow. The smoke was the result of a pot left unattended on the stove.

According to Garth Rabel, Airdrie Fire Department’s deputy chief, there was a lot of smoke, although very little damage, as the fire itself was very small.

Rabel said a middle-aged man, who lived in the home, was helped from the residence and treated by firefighters for minor smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital by paramedics.

Fire crews quickly brought the incident under control with minimal damage to structure and contents.

Once the fire had been extinguished, the home was ventilated and monitored for air quality. There were four AFD apparatus and 12 firefighters on scene.

Residents were allowed back in the home later that evening.

Rabel reminds Airdronians to never leave the stove or oven unattended.

“Cooking is still one of the main reasons for residential fires,” said Rabel, adding spring is a good time to change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Carbon monoxide detectors should be changed after seven years and smoke detectors after 10 years, he added.

Rabel said the devices should be placed within three to five metres of sleeping areas.

Five Airdrie Fire Department firefighters responded to a work site injury, located at 2300 Baywater Crescent, March 19 at around 10:45 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found AHS paramedics treating a construction worker in the basement under construction. The man had fallen about 10 feet from the main floor through the basement access hole.

Firefighters worked with paramedics to package and secure the patient to a spine board for removal through a basement window opening.

Once outside he was placed on a stretcher and quickly moved into a waiting ambulance for further assessment and transport to hospital.

The work site was secured by RCMP. Occupational Health and Safety are investigating this incident.
