One Airdrie resident is raising a stink about Condillo Foods, located at 215 East Lake Blvd.

Theresa Carroll has lived in the Thorburn neighbourhood in Airdrie for more than 13 years and she is concerned about the smell coming from the factory that produces edible corn basedñproducts such as corn chips and potato chips. Condillo is a subsidiary of Old Dutch that has been in Airdrie for 30 years.

Carrollís compliant is with the smell that emanates from the factory, that in some instances has been so bad she said she hasnít been able to go outside.

ìIíve smelled it when I drive by there for the last 13 years, but recently itís become so offensive that I can smell it from my home or from Genesis Place,î said Carroll.

She has made phone calls to her neighbours and to representatives from Condillo to see what can be done about the smell of processed corn being cooked, but says, she feels the company is not doing enough to stop the smell from wafting into nearby communities.

Condillo Foods Plant Manager Derek Walker said recent issues have arisen due to a system failure in a newly installed exhaust system.

ìWe installed a new treatment system in November that is designed to minimize offensive odours,î said Walker.

ìThere was a system failure so it hadnít been doing its job. We cook corn and weíre never going to have a completely odourless system but weíve been making adjustments to right this issue.î

The plant employs 140 people in Airdrie and Walker says he will be examining all possible solutions to the problem, including fixing the current system.

ìWeíve invested a considerable amount of money into this system and we have an image to protect,î he said.

City of Airdrie staff was not available to comment on the plantís smell before press time.
