RCMP warn about backcountry travel

The Cochrane RCMP is cautioning residents to take care and be vigilant when planning outdoor activities such as camping or hiking this spring and summer.

The Cochrane RCMP is cautioning residents to take care and be vigilant when planning outdoor activities such as camping or hiking this spring and summer.

This reminder comes on the heels of a 28-year-old Calgary man going missing in the backcountry near Cochrane on May 21.

According to RCMP reports, the man had been travelling alone in his Jeep into the back country, when his vehicle became stuck.

He made several attempts to dislodge the vehicle without success and decided to get out and walk.

He navigated through the forest overnight and made his way to a rural air strip where a Conservation Officer from Kananaskis Emergency Services located him.

Cochrane RCMP would like to remind anyone planning to venture into the back country of the inherent dangers that can be present when unprepared for emergency situations.

Cellular phone coverage is often non-existent in these areas and police advise a good planning strategy that includes notifying family members and friends of the area you intend to be in as it will be beneficial to police if a search is initiated.
