A 35 year old man from the Stoney First Nation was killed when he was struck by a vehicle as he was walking on Highway 1 near Jumping Pound Road early in the morning on Dec. 13, according to Cochrane RCMP Spokesman Corporal Mel Calahasen.

The incident happened approximately one kilometre west of Highway 22 south of Cochrane, according to Calahasen. The man was walking westbound in the west lane when he was struck.

“Weather at the time was heavy snow and roads were wet,” Calahasen said. “Alcohol and speed are not considered to be contributing factors.”

EMS was called from Cochrane.

“EMS essentially verified for RCMP that (the man) was deceased,” said EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux.

“The operator of the motor vehicle was shaken, but not injured,” Calahasen said.

The man’s identity is not being released at the request of his family, according to RCMP.

Murder Charge Laid

RCMP said they have made arrests in the 2006 murder of Calgarian Wayman Cornell Scott, 32.

Charged with First Degree Murder is David Daviau, 28, of Calgary. Kyle Andree, 29, also of Calgary, has been charged with Manslaughter and Accessory After the Fact.

Scott’s body was dumped on a frozen field near Conrich, according to RCMP. The RCMP investigation, conducted with the assistance of Calgary Police Services (CPS), revealed he was shot at a residence in Calgary in 2006 and then moved to the Conrich area. His body was found on Dec. 11, 2006.

Daviau and Andree were arrested in Ontario and transported to the Calgary Remand Centre to await trial, according to RCMP Southern Alberta Media Relations Spokesperson Corporal Sharon Franks. They appeared in court in Calgary on Dec. 17. The outcome of that appearance was not known at press time.

According to Franks, the Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate and would like to hear from anyone with any information at (403) 699-2640.

If you have any information on any crime, call your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
