A Sagewood woman says she feels less safe in her home after an intruder broke in and sexually assaulted one of her friends in the early morning hours of June 29.
Sarah Adrian and five of her friends gathered together to celebrate her birthday on June 28, with dinner at a local restaurant followed by drinks at an Airdrie bar. The party moved to her home in Sagewood where she and the others ordered pizza around 3:30 a.m. on June 29 after spending some time on her back deck.
Adrian and four of her friends went to bed after the pizza, leaving a fifth friend asleep on the couch downstairs. Soon after, they were awakened when the woman asleep downstairs screamed and ran upstairs.
“She told us ‘someone’s in your house and attacked me,’” said Adrian.
Adrian immediately called 911.
RCMP responded and searched the home and property, including a search by the K-9 unit but could not locate the suspect.
Adrian said her friend told her the suspect had climbed on top of her, told her to be quiet, lifted up her shirt and touched her breast. The friend fought back by kicking him and he ran off.
A statement released by RCMP on July 10 describes the suspect as Caucasian, mid to late 30s, with a thin build, approximately 5’10” to six-feet tall, with dark short hair and a short beard. They have released a composite sketch and are asking for the public’s help identifying the man.
Because Adrian and her friends were going in and out of the home through the back door as they celebrated her birthday on the home’s back deck, she said she thinks the man probably entered the home and hid until the six friends had gone to bed.
The victim told Adrian she awoke and saw a person in the kitchen adjacent to the room where she was sleeping on the couch but initially thought it was one of her friends.
Adrian’s husband and children were not at home at the time of the incident that has left her rattled.
“Airdrie was so safe,” she said. “There were times I used to leave the house unlocked when I’d go to get groceries. Now we’ve had an alarm installed.”
