RCMP is investigating what caused a semi truck to rollover on southbound Highway 2 just south of the Yankee Valley Boulevard interchange Dec. 10.

Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Francine Hennelly said the 24-year-old driver of the semi from Calgary appears to have lost control of the truck, rolling the vehicle into the west ditch. RCMP received a 911 call for assistance at 6:02 p.m. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

The driver was able to get out of the truck, however, when paramedics arrived they determined he had fairly significant soft tissue injuries, according to EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux. He was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary in serious but stable, non life-threatening condition.

According to Hennelly, traffic in the area was impacted for quite some time and this continued the next day, Dec. 11, when crews were dispatched to upright the semi and remove it from the scene around 2 p.m.

Serious Collision

Two men were injured when their cars collided head-on on Highway 567 near Range Road 285 east of Airdrie Dec. 11 at approximately 7 a.m.

Hennelly said a 33-year-old man from Irricana lost control of the Jeep Cherokee he was driving eastbound on Highway 567 and collided with a westbound Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 57-year-old man from Crossfield.

“It was slippery that day,” Hennelly said in explaining investigators believe road conditions to be a major cause of the collision.

The man from Irricana was transported to a hospital in Calgary with minor injuries. The driver of the Equinox was trapped in his vehicle for some time while crews from the Airdrie Fire Department worked to extricate him using the jaws of life. He was transported to hospital in Calgary in serious, non life-threatening condition.

Highway 567 was closed for approximately an hour and a half while emergency crews cleared the scene.

Hit and Run

Airdrie RCMP is asking for the public’s help to find the driver of an SUV that rear-ended another vehicle on Yankee Valley Boulevard Dec. 8.

The driver of a car was stopped eastbound on Yankee Valley Boulevard just east of the train tracks when the vehicle was rear-ended by the SUV. The driver of the SUV fled the scene, through a red light.

The driver of the car was treated on scene for minor injuries by paramedics.

According to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis, witnesses told police the driver of the SUV was a woman with blonde hair. The SUV is either blue or grey in colour. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Airdrie RCMP non-emergency line at 403-945-7267.

Items Stolen

A woman from High River received a rude welcome to Airdrie when her car was broken into and a number of items, including her purse, wallet and Christmas gifts valued at approximately $100, were stolen as she enjoyed a hockey game at the Ron Ebbeson Arena Dec. 11.

The incident happened between 5:30 and 7 p.m. in the arena parking lot. The culprits smashed a window to gain access to the inside of the 2006 Cadillac Escalade.

The wallet was found in Calgary on Dec. 13 by Calgary Police Services and the victim was notified, Hennelly said. The other items remain missing.
