The Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) will be holding a child safety seat inspection clinic on Nov. 26 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
The clinic is being used to train RCMP and Traffic Sheriffs on the proper way to inspect child safety seats, as well as educate the general public on how to properly install them.
“We are going to have certified officers on hand who will be able to examine car seats to see if they meet applicable provincial and federal standards,” explained Airdrie ITU Sheriff Jason Graw. “We aren’t going to be enforcing these standards or handing out tickets, only instructing people on how to install their seats the right way.”
According to Graw, nearly 50 per cent of all car seats on the road are improperly installed, a statistic that is frightening when it comes to motor vehicle accidents.
“People need to carefully read the manuals that come with their car seats,” said Graw. “One of the worst things to go through for any parent would be the loss of a child due to a car seat that was not installed the right way. Something that could have been completely avoided had it been done correctly.”
Members of the public who would like to bring their vehicle in to have their child safety seat inspected are asked to call and make an appointment in advance at 403-945-7284.
