A 19-year-old man from Calgary faces multiple charges including possession of a prohibited weapon after RCMP found a sawed-off shotgun in his vehicle during a routine traffic stop Dec. 3.

Officers from the Airdrie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit were on patrol when they spotted two men in a vehicle stopped at a red light on Veterans Boulevard at approximately 7:12 p.m. smoking what officers believed to be marijuana.

The officers stopped the vehicle and had cause to do a search, during which they found a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition and a quantity of marijuana.

Devon Torrie has been charged with careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition and possession of a controlled substance – marijuana.

According to RCMP Media Liaison Constable Francine Hennelly, a charge of careless use of a firearm was likely laid because of the way the shotgun was being transported.

“(It may) not have been in a locked box with a trigger lock, that sort of thing,” she said.

The passenger, a 20-year-old man from Airdrie, was not charged and was released, according to Hennelly.

Torrie will make his first appearance in Airdrie Provincial Court on Jan. 21, 2016.

Charges Laid

A woman has now been charged following an incident on Nov. 25 during which she lost control of her vehicle and drove into the side of a home in Bayside.

Yogita, 34, has been charged with Careless Driving under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, according to Hennelly. The charge carries a fine of $543. According to Hennelly, the Calgary woman has only one name on her driver’s license.

Yogita was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the collision. The homeowners were at home at the time but were not injured.

An estimated cost to repair the home, which was substantially damaged in the incident, is being determined with the homeowners’ insurance company.

Shoplifting

London Drugs on Main Street South West was victimized by shoplifters twice on the same day according to information released by RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis.

In the first incident, a woman entered the store Nov. 28 at approximately 1:20 p.m. and proceeded to steal several pieces of clothing, including boots, pajamas and socks.

Employees noticed the theft and called RCMP, providing officers with video surveillance footage.

The woman is described as 16 to 22 years old with long, straight black hair. She was wearing a grey sweater, black jeans and black-rimmed glasses.

Only two hours later, a man entered the store, selected a number of items from the shelves including a robotic vacuum cleaner and left without paying. Staff spotted the man as he was leaving and attempted to speak to him, however, he fled. The stolen items were found a short distance away from the store.

RCMP was called and provided with video surveillance footage. The man is described as Cacausian, in his 30s with blonde hair. He was wearing a dark-coloured Under Armour brand jacket and a dark-coloured shirt.
