Airdrie RCMP arrested a man attempting to break into a parked car near the East Lake Industrial Park on Nov. 12 at around 1:15 a.m.

The male suspect fled the scene but police were able to follow his tracks and locate him. He was arrested a short time later without incident for mischief and escorted to the Airdrie RCMP detachment.

Police Dog Services were dispatched and were able to identify several more vehicles that had been targeted.

The suspect has been identified as Darrell Poitras, a 36-year-old man from Calgary. He was charged with five counts of mischief and made his first appearance in Airdrie Provincial Court on Nov. 14.

According to RCMP, other areas including Cochrane, Chestermere and Calgary have seen an influx of car prowling and break and enters after thieves break into vehicles and take garage door openers to gain access to homes.

During the week of Nov. 5 to Nov. 10, there were also five residential break and enters in Chestermere that resulted in the arrest of a 21-year-old local man resident whose name is not being released because police say he is dealing with drug addiction issues.

Dangerous motorcyclist

A 24-year-old man from Calgary has been charged after he fled from Integrated Traffic Unit officers on his motorcycle on Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m. Officers were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 2 north of Airdrie when they observed a motorcycle travelling over 200 km/hr northbound on Highway 2.

Due to the speed at which the motorcycle was travelling, officers were unable to catch up until the motorcyclist became caught up in traffic near the Olds overpass.

At that time, the motorcyclist noticed the officers, quickly pulled over, jumped off the motorcycle and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers were able to catch him and he was taken into custody without further incident. The investigation is continuing and numerous criminal and traffic charges are pending against Spencer Wilson, a 24-year-old man from Calgary.

He has been charged with dangerous driving, two counts of obstructing a peace officer, breach of recognizance, altering a vehicle identification number, possessing a vehicle with altered vehicle identification number, possessing stolen property, two counts of unlawful possession of another personís identity document, improper class of drivers license and failure to produce a valid drivers license. He is scheduled to appear in Airdrie Provincial Court on Nov. 21.
