During the early morning hours of July 13, the Cochrane RCMP responded to a weapons complaint on the Stoney First Nation.

Initial reports indicated a man brandishing a machete and a rifle had assaulted two women and one man. The Cochrane RCMP responded with the support of the Calgary RCMP Emergency Response Team that resulted in the peaceful arrest of a 47-year-old Morley man.

He faces charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, careless use of a firearm and several other firearms related offences. The three injured people were transported by ambulance to hospital where they received treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The name of the suspect is not being released as the investigation continues.

On July 8 at about 11 p.m., the Cochrane RCMP responded to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 1, just east of Scott Lake Hill.

Upon investigation, police were able to determine that a silver Subaru Imprezza was travelling eastbound on Highway 1, when the driver of the vehicle attempted to swerve and miss a black bear.

The vehicle collided with the bear, causing the driver to lose control, go into the meridian and roll several times. The vehicle came to a rest on its roof in the westbound lanes of Highway 1.

A male driver in his 20s and a female passenger, also in her 20s, were transported to the hospital by ambulance with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol and speed were not factors in the collision. Weather and road conditions were good at the time of the collision.

On July 7 at about 11:50 a.m., Cochrane RCMP officers assisted a 45-year-old woman and her two children, ages 12 and 13, who were rafting on the Bow River when their rafts capsized.

The two youths who were on a separate raft continued to float down the river. The woman was able to get to the shore, but had not seen or heard from her children for about an hour. The Forestry Department, Conservation and Kananaskis Emergency Services attended the scene and assisted with an extensive search, which lasted about two hours.

With the help of a Forestry and Alpine Helicopter, the two youths were located on the shore of the Bow River. The Alpine Helicopter was able to rescue both and take them to safety. Both children were wearing life jackets at the time. The kids were shaken up but did not suffer any injuries. The woman was uninjured as well.

Police said the Bow River is dangerous and residents should use extreme caution at all times

On July 11 at about 5 p.m., the Strathmore RCMP received a report of a break and enter with theft of firearms in Rocky View County.

Unknown suspects broke into a residence and stole two firearms. The firearms are a Winchester Model 94, lever action 303 and a .22 calibre Winchester bolt Wildcat with a Bushnell scope.

A 45-year-old man is facing several charges after fleeing from a traffic stop on Highway 2 on the weekend.

On July 9 at 3:30 p.m., a member of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit pulled over a green Ford Explorer on southbound Highway 2 at the Calgary city limits for a minor traffic offence.

The driver was unable to produce identification of any kind, and gave the officer a false name and date of birth. Police say, the officer became suspicious when the driver did not know any pertinent details about the person he was pretending to be. When the officer confronted the driver about the inconsistencies in his story, the driver slammed the door and drove away. The officer did not follow the vehicle.

“Despite the accused’s efforts to hide his identity from the traffic officer, we were able to determine his identity through various investigative techniques,” said Sheriff Jason Graw.

“While we were completing the paper work here in Airdrie to have warrants issued for the accused, he was subsequently arrested in Calgary on unrelated matters and we were able to track him down with the assistance of the Calgary Police Service.”

As a result of the traffic stop that occurred on Highway 2 and the driver’s subsequent decision to flee, the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit has laid numerous charges against Colin Charles Hupper, of no fixed address.

“In this case, the driver made a split-second decision to flee from the officer,” said Graw.

“Fortunately, no one was injured as a result. While it may have seemed like good idea at the time, the decision to flee has only resulted in more serious charges being laid against the accused.”

On July 10 at 1:18 p.m., members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit responded to multiple 911 calls regarding an erratic driver on Highway 2 southbound, north of Airdrie.

It was reported that a white Lincoln four-door automobile was travelling southbound at a high rate of speed, and navigating the heavy traffic by passing other motorists on the shoulder. One of the responding officers clocked the vehicle traveling at 160 km/h, and conducted a traffic stop just north of Airdrie. As the vehicle was coming to a stop, the officer saw the driver exchange seats with the only other vehicle occupant. As a result of this incident, a 25-year-old man from Calgary is now facing charges of dangerous driving, obstructing a peace officer, exchanging places with another occupant while the vehicle is in motion, and driving without an operator’s licence.

If you have information on any unsolved crime, call your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
