Police Notebook: Thief uses real ID in holdup, gets caught

Cochrane RCMP have two suspects in custody after the pair stole alcohol from Bow Ridge Liquor Store, Feb. 5.

The men were seen stealing three bottles of liquor.

However, before they left the store, they posed for the security camera and provided real identification to the clerk.

The duo departed in a waiting vehicle, however, police located them a short while later. RCMP officers made eight arrests when they found the two men, who had joined up with others.

Lars Bird and Killick Hunter are now charged with theft under $5,000. Bird also faces three counts of failing to comply with parole conditions.

Skip Bird, one of the others arrested, was charged with two counts of failing breaching probation.

The brothers pleaded guilty and Lars paid a $600 fine. Skip served two days in jail.

Hunter was released and will appear in court on April 3.

On Feb. 11 at 2:15 p.m., Strathmore and Chestermere RCMP responded to reports of a structural blaze on a property at Range Road 281. A large, detached shop was fully engulfed in flames upon police arrival. Rocky View Countyís fire department extinguished the blaze.

Smoke and flames damaged multiple vehicles outside the shop.

One man was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Police believe the fire was an accident and donít consider it suspicious.

Strathmore RCMP closed a single lane on Garden Road Feb. 14 between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. north of Highway 1 and south of McKnight Blvd. to re-enact a shooting from last June for Crime Stoppers.
