A 33-year-old Drumheller man has been charged with speeding at more than 50 km/hour over the posted speed limit after a member of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit stopped him east of Beiseker on March 11 at 4:20 p.m.

A 33-year-old Drumheller man has been charged with speeding at more than 50 km/hour over the posted speed limit after a member of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit stopped him east of Beiseker on March 11 at 4:20 p.m.

The man was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Impala and was stopped on Highway 9 after an officer clocked him at 168 km/hour on the undivided highway.

The posted speed limit at that location is 100 km/hour.

ìIntercepting speeding drivers is one of the top six priorities of our Integrated Traffic Unit,î said Sheriff Jason Graw.

ìApproximately 30 per cent of serious injury and fatal collisions in rural Alberta involve a speeding vehicle - and not only that, if you are involved in a collision, itís going to hurt a whole lot more at 168 km/hour than 100 km/hour.î

The driver is scheduled to appear in Airdrie Provincial Court on May 15.

On March 5, suspects broke into three residences in the Cove Close and Lakeside Greens areas of Chestermere.

On March 8, three more houses in the Windermere and Hawkmere neighbourhoods were burgled.

Jewelry was stolen from the homes. The break and enters all occurred during daylight hours when residents were away. In most cases, the suspects forced entry through rear ground-level windows.

The Chestermere RCMP is asking residents to be vigilant in reporting suspicious activity and ensuring their residences are well secured.

Police discourage residents from storing large amounts of currency or jewelry in their homes.

If you have information on any unsolved crime, contact your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers will pay cash rewards up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
