Airdrie RCMP and the Crossfield and Airdrie Fire Departments responded to multiple accidents on Highway 2 just south of Crossfield as Chinook winds caused icy conditions, Jan. 20.

At about 4 p.m. a small Toyota truck rolled off the on-ramp south of Crossfield heading southbound on Highway 2, slowing traffic in the area for about an hour. No serious injuries were reported.

Around 11 p.m., a SUV rolled in the meridian of Highway 2, in the same area of the previous accident. Passengers were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

One hour later, along the same stretch of highway, a truck and camper flipped, blocking the southbound lanes of the road, forcing RCMP to close Highway 2 between Crossfield and Airdrie. Passengers were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

“Due to extreme black ice and icy conditions, there were multiple collisions and vehicles going off the road in that specific stretch of highway,” said Airdrie RCMP Cst. Rob Frizzell.

“We are encouraging people to drive cautiously for the conditions.”

On Jan. 9, Airdrie RCMP responded to a call of a break and enter to a residence on Big Springs Drive.

The house was broken into sometime between Jan. 5 and Jan. 8.

The unknown suspects gained entry through a side door and stole two rifles, two bows, two swords and a battle axe. The residents were not home at the time of the break-in.

The crime is still under investigation.

Between 5:20 p.m. on Jan. 21 and 8 a.m. on Jan. 22, seven motor vehicles were broken into in various neighbourhoods of Airdrie. The suspects stole various items including GPS units, iPods, CDs and spare change.

The Airdrie RCMP would like to remind residents to remove all valuables from parked vehicles and to ensure that they are locked when unattended.

The Airdrie RCMP is investigating the theft of milk jugs from the recycling facility on East Lake Hill.

During the night of Jan. 20, unknown suspects entered the recycling facility and stole about $200 worth of recyclables from the centre.

Police said there does not appear to be any forced entry and there were no employees working at the time of the incident.

This is the fourth break and enter to this facility in the last year. The approximate value of the stolen goods exceeds $5,000.

If you have information on any unsolved crime, call Airdrie RCMP at 403-945-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
