An Airdrie father has been sentenced to two years in prison after sexually assaulting his daughter’s seven-year-old friend on a camping trip in June 2008 in Kananaskis Country.
The 45-year-old was given probation for another two years subsequent to his sentence. He will also be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.
While camping, the victim came to sleep in the trailer of her friend. There, the man committed a major sexual assault on her. She pretended to be asleep. The next day she informed her mother of what took place.
The man, who lived in Willowbrook, will be a registered sex offender for life and must submit a DNA sample to police.
Crown prosecutor Doug Simpson pressed for a three-year sentence, while defence lawyer Karen Molle said it didn’t warrant such a penalty.
Between Oct. 7 and 10, Airdrie RCMP’s Integrated Traffic Unit pulled over 183 drivers, 127 of whom were caught speeding.
This year’s Thanksgiving crackdown coincided with Operation Impact, a nationally mandated traffic enforcement plan.
“ Overall, area highways were very busy over the long weekend,” said Sheriff Jason Graw. “ While most motorists chose to obey the law and drive responsibly, there are always a few that do not - as you can see from the number of violation tickets that our officers handed out. Fortunately, there were no fatal collisions in areas that we patrol over the weekend - for us, that makes for a successful weekend.”
Graw said the fastest speeder was clocked on Oct. 8 at 172 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. A 30-year-old Calgary man in a four-door Lexus was travelling northbound on Highway 9 just south of Irricana.
“ He’s going to court,” said Graw. “ There’s possibly a $1,000 fine and a two-week suspension of his licence.”
The traffic unit also executed three arrests based on outstanding warrants.
There were seven tickets for failing to stop at a stop sign, five seat belt infractions, 12 moving violations and 15 non-moving violations.
“ It’s pretty much on par with other long weekends,” said Graw. “ I think we were pretty successful. We don’t measure our success in dollar and cents. It’s about reducing fatal collisions and injury collisions.”
Airdrie RCMP is currently tracking individuals who broke into and stole various items from approximately 13 vehicles in the southwest area of Airdrie. Sometime during the night of Oct. 9 to 10, unknown suspects entered locked and unlocked vehicles in the Sagewood, Coppers, and Luxstone neighbourhoods and stole various valuables from the vehicles including, currency, GPS’, CDs, wallets, purses and a laptop.
Police would encourage people to remove any valuables from vehicles to avoid becoming targets for these types of crimes. Anybody who’s had their vehicle broken into is asked to make a report to police so they can map these crimes and direct resources appropriately.
