Police continue to investigate the discovery of human skeletal remains located on a rural property east of Langdon.
As of press time on May 17, police were still awaiting the results of an autopsy.
“We believe the bones are human,” said RCMP Spokesperson Sgt. Patricia Neely during a media scrum on the property May 14.
A landowner made the discovery when cleaning his land near Range Road 275 and Township 232 May 13 and immediately contacted the RCMP, she said.
Strathmore RCMP, the RCMP Serious Crimes Unit and RCMP Forensic Identification Unit are assisting in the investigation.
“They are here on scene gathering and looking for as much evidence and bones as they can from this area,” said Neely.
“The primary focus is trying to identify this individual.”
At this time, it is unknown how long the remains have been there and the Missing Persons Unit is involved to assist in identifying the deceased.
“We could have a missing person from this area from 70 years ago to (last week),” said Neely when asked if RCMP know of anyone missing in the area.
The age, gender and time of death of the individual remain unknown until the results of the autopsy are revealed.
She said the autopsy at the medical examiners officer will help the cops discover the time of death and allow them to move forward with their investigation.
The RCMP Special Tactical Operations Team with the assistance of the Foothills Search and Rescue Team performed an extensive search of the surrounding area on May 15, to ensure all remains and evidence are located.
The remains were turned over to the medical examiner as well as an anthropologist to assist in determining the identity of the deceased person.
