The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has identified the human remains found east of Airdrie on May 4 as being those of Jessica Rae Newman of Calgary.

According to a May 11 release, an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Medical Examiner positively identified the body as being Newman. CPS is not releasing the cause of death, however, it is being treated as a homicide, according to the release.

The 24-year-old had been reported missing in Calgary in March. According to the CPS, she was last seen in the Forest Lawn area in northeast Calgary at approximately 9:30 p.m. on March 10.

Newman’s body was found by a work crew in a ditch near Range Road 285 and Township Road 264, east of Airdrie at approximately 4 p.m. on May 4, according to Airdrie RCMP.

RCMP responded and secured the area. After consulting with CPS, investigators said they believed the body may be that of a young woman missing from Calgary since March.

The investigation was then turned over to CPS, according to a release issued by Airdrie RCMP on May 5.

The body was moved to the Calgary Medical Examiners office on May 4 and an autopsy took place on May 5 to help determine its identity.

In the May 11 release, CPS said the investigation was ongoing and no further information would be released until that investigation was completed.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the CPS Homicide Unit Tip Line at 403-428-8877 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

If you have any information on any crime, call the Airdrie RCMP detachment at (403) 945-7200 or Crime Stoppers.
