Staff from the City’s Parks Department held an open house at City Hall Nov. 24 to present the results from recent public consultation regarding the future of Airdrie’s parks system.
According to Archie Lang, operations manager of Parks and Public Works for the City of Airdrie, people taking part in the public consultation indicated they’d like “more of everything.”
“The public consultation and internal consultation, as well as the consultation we’ve done with user groups, they’ve shown they’d like to have more amenities – more soccer fields, more tennis courts, another regional park. They’d like to have another Genesis Place at some point as well.
“This is about pointing the Parks (department) and parks development in the right direction for the next decade.”
Harry Plummer with the Airdrie Highlanders Rugby Club was one of approximately 20 residents who attended the open house Nov. 24. He said he was impressed with the plans being developed.
“It’s wonderful,” he said. “The plan looks very interesting. They’ve raised some great issues facing the city including our growth.”
According to Lang, staff will now take the information they’ve gathered and put it together in a master plan called the Great Places Plan.
“Within the Great Places Plan there’s going to be a schedule that’s going to show, ‘Here’s what the people wanted, here’s what we heard and here’s the schedule to make it happen.’”
Lang said he expects the Great Places Plan will be presented to City council early in 2016.
